Teens And Drunk Driving- A Deadly Concotion

Teen age is the age of fun and enjoyment. Its an age of exploring new and exciting worlds formerly unavailable to the teenagers. But this age is also very critical as during it, many habits having some serious consequences may become a part of the life of teenagers. Of late, it has been seen that teens are going for uncontrolled drinking sprees and following it up with driving under the influence of alcohol. It has become so common these days that teens and drunk driving are now seen together.

Teenagers take on the habit of drinking under the influence of their friends and other such members of the society. Sometimes, its only the curiosity of tasting that forbidden drink that propels them towards alcohol. What makes things worse is the lack of restraint. Teenagers are unable to impose restraint upon themselves due to various reasons. They consume alcohol beyond the acceptable limit of alcohol that their body can process. And when they mix it with another recently acquired skill of driving, it becomes a deadly concoction.

Teens are generally ready to try everything (whether it is smoking or drinking). Hence, it should be the responsibility of the parents to make their children become aware of the harmful effects of drunk driving.

The main reason behind the drinking habit of teenagers is that when a teenager, usually a non alcoholic, associates with a group that consumes alcohol then a lot of pressure is exerted on him or her to become a part of the group and drink with it. In recent times the number of teenagers involved in alcohol related accidents are increasing at a fast pace. Therefore it is really important to stop this activity at the initial stage only. Otherwise it will transform into a life threatening habit that can endanger the life of not only the one who is doing it but also those around him or her.

The teenagers who have a blood alcohol level of .05 to .1 are 18 times more likely to suffer a single vehicle crash than their non drinking counterparts. Teenage girls are more prone to getting involved in vehicle crashes than boys.

There are various laws regarding drunk driving in various countries. Each and every country is trying to lower the number of road accidents involving teens and drunk driving. For this they have raised the legal drinking age of the individuals. Also, countries like US have come up with Driving Under Influence laws which means that an individual found driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be considered as a criminal. A huge fine and imprisonment may be rewarded to the person as well.
